REMINDER and UPDATE for Free Screening: FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHILDREN
Free Screening of “For the Sake of the Children” Is Sunday, March 3!
San Diego Calif. — This update is for the event on March 3, 2019. The update itself is dated Feb. 28, 2019 and provides new details about the program.
Join us for the San Diego screening of For the Sake of the Children, a new film by Joe Fox and Marlene Shigekawa, this Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 2 p.m.
The documentary film tells the poignant stories of three generations of Japanese Americans whose families were incarcerated during World War II, and the long-term impact of the incarceration experience on them as descendants. Producer Marlene Shigekawa was herself born in Poston.
The screening is cosponsored by the Buddhist Temple of San Diego, Japanese-American Historical Society of San Diego, the Japanese American Citizens League of San Diego, and the Poston Community Alliance.
The film looks at a civl and humanitarian injustice which took place over 70 years ago and which most rational people would agree was unconstitutional and should never be repeated. A panel discussion will follow the screening, moderated by filmmaker Lane Nishikawa and featuring executive producer Marlene Shigekawa with cast members Mary Higuchi and San Diegan Diane McCabe. The event is free but seating is limited.
Photographer Shane Sato will have copies of his book, The Go for Broke Spirit, available at the screening. Shane Sato is a board member of the Poston Community Alliance, whose mother and her side of the family, the Yasudas, were imprisoned at Poston II. Many of the veterans who enlisted out of these WRA camps did so to give a better life for their children.
