hello...
To Our Path

An American Flowering of Everyday Buddhism, with Roots in Japan

For visitors to our Temple, we welcome you to learn more about our path.

The Buddhist Temple of San Diego (BTSD) represents Shin Buddhism, the Jodo Shinshu sect of the Pure Land School, of the Mahayana branch of Buddhist tradition. As such our temple is a member of the Buddhist Churches of America, established in 1899, and through the BCA is affiliated with the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha in Kyoto, Japan.

Since 1926 BTSD has served as both a spiritual and cultural resource in San Diego.

From its start, Shin Buddhism has been focused on everyday people and our tradition is not monastic. "Come as You Are" is our motto, and through the guidance of our Dharma friends, especially our resident minister and teacher, Rev. Dr. Kenji Akahoshi, we continue to explore the Buddha path that is right below our feet. Learn more about Buddhism here.
