Register for Natto Workshop (Feb 4) -- Japanese Knife Sharpening Workshop Now Closed

The Temple thanks you for your enthusiastic response to two workshops led by professional Taiko player Eien Hunter-Ishikawa the evening of Tuesday, February 4. The knife-sharpening workshop is now closed, thanks to high interest.

Slots are still open for the Natto Demonstration; learn more following.

Natto Demonstration (lecture, tasting, Q&A)

The demo will include samples of fresh natto and offer ideas for traditional and non-traditional preparations. In Japan, natto is highly regarded as a "superfood" with many health benefits including cardiovascular health, brain function, bone and teeth strength, and improved digestive system. Because all natto imported into the United States is frozen, this is a very rare opportunity to taste fresh, organic natto, whether you consider yourself a fan or not yet.

February 4, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
$20

Space is limited and registration by email is required.

Location

Both events will be presesnted at the Buddhist Temple of San Diego on the office level (first full floor) of our main building. Onsite parking is available from 29th Street. For directions and maps, click here.

We thank you for the great response to our knive-sharpening workshop. We have reached the limit to the number of participants and reservations are closed. We encourage you to consider the Natto demonstration, also led by Eien.

In this workshop, Eien will teach the basics of Japanese knife sharpening on water stones. Japanese knife culture is distinct in several ways — the blade is sharper and thinner, sharpening is done on stones, and all chefs sharpen their own knives to complement their individual cutting style. With this introduction of proper techniques, everyone will be able to sharpen their own knives and feel the joy of cooking with a sharp blade.
