Honoring Buddhist Women
BWA Memorial Service
The Buddhist Women’s Association honors important women in the Buddhist Temple of San Diego’s history during our BWA Memorial Service on Sunday, Feb. 16. The memorials start first, however, beyond our local history, with two awesome Japanese women whose efforts created the international organization that exists today.

Lady Takeko Kujo dedicated much of her adult life to giving a greater voice to Buddhist women, and is honored, with her sister-in-law, Kazuko Ohtani, for co-founding the BWA (known as Fujinkai in Japanese) and expanding the now international organization. Lady Yoshiko Ohtani later revitalized the organization in Japan, following the war years.
The Memorial Service
As in last year, this year the BWA Memorial Service will be combined with the Temple’s Nirvana Day observance, both conducted by guest speaker Rev. Diana Thompson of the Tri-State Denver Buddhist Temple. The services will begin at 10 a.m. in the Temple’s Hondo or main hall sanctuary. The service is free and open to all and visitors can honor the awesome Buddhist women in their lives with offerings.
