For those of you looking to plan your day to join us for the Julyy 31 Obon Services and Bon Odori, we can now share more details.
OUR SERVICES
Reservations Are Now Closed. We have reached capacity under Covid levels for the live service starting at 2 p.m.
Livestream of Service Available. The 2 p.m. service can be viewed via livestream on the Tetmple's YouTube channel. See link above and use at 2 p.m. on July 31.
Rev. Gregory Gibbs, BTSD’s supervising minister and resident minister of the Pasadena Buddhist Temple, and BTSD’s Rev. Maribeth Smith will lead our service. Service chair will be Bill Teague, Minister’s Assistant.
OUR BON ODORI
This year our Bon Odori starts at 5 p.m. in the Temple parking lot. The event does not require reservations and is open to Temple Members and Dharma Friends.
Food: Limited snack bar, taiyaki, hotdogs, sushi; food trucks will be available. Food sales begin at 3:30 p.m.
Dress: Yukata or kimono welcome, please dress at home before the Odori. With apologies, we do not have changing rooms available for you this year.
Covid Prevention: Masks strongly recommended outdoors and required indoors.
Bon Again Asian Resale Shop: The shop will open at 12 noon and be open following the Obon Service, remaining open until it closes some time following the end of the Bon Odori in the evening. All proceeds benefit our scholarship program.
FULL SCHEDULE
9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. – Parking lot setup of poles, lanterns, yagura (stage), canopies tables and
chairs. Many volunteers are asked to come out and lend a helping hand.
11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - Hatsubon families are invited to make lanterns in memory of loved ones who
passed away since O Bon 2021. Lantern-making will take place in the dining
room. A light lunch will be served to the Hatsubon families.
12 Noon to Close of Bon Odori - Bon Again Asian Resale Shop in the Sangha Hall.
2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. – O Bon/Hatsubon service. Rev. Gibbs will officiate, and Rev. Maribeth Smith
will co-officiate. The hondo will be limited to 100 attendees. Make your
reservation on the temple’s website or call the office. Mask wearing is
required and there will be no incense burning.
3:30 p.m. – Food sales will begin in the parking lot. Local vendors selling their delectable
delights include Sushi On A Roll, Onigiri House and Yatai.
BWA will sell scrumptious hot dogs, and the temple will offer taiyaki and
bottled water.
5:00 p.m. - Rev. Gibbs will open the Bon Odori with a brief explanation of the tradition,
followed by Nembutsu Gassho.
5:15 p.m. – Recognition of 2021 college graduates and announcement of continuing
education scholarship recipients.
5:30 p.m. – Processional to odori circle led by Rev. Gibbs, followed by Hatsubon families
and display of the Hatsubon lanterns, and dancers.
6:15 p.m. – Intermission and performance by BTSD Taiko
6:30 p.m. - Odori resumes
7:15 p.m. - End of 2022 BTSD Bon Odori. Cleanup of grounds.
UPDATED PARKING INFORMATION:
Parking will be available along Market, 29th and Dodson streets and Island Avenue.
