Memorial Day Weekend Events

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the temple will conduct and participate in various services. The Sangha is encouraged to take part in the activities and to pause in a moment of reflection honoring deceased loved ones and military personnel who served our country.

 Here is the list of remembrances for May 27- 29:

Saturday, May 27 - Imperial Valley. BTSD will travel to the Imperial Valley to conduct cemetery services in Calexico (9 a.m.), El Centro (10:30 a.m.) and Brawley (11:30 a.m.) on Saturday, May 27. Rev. Laverne Imori will officiate the services.

 This year, the temple invited the Sangha to travel and participate in the services. Individuals interested in the services were asked to contact the temple by May 21 to reserve a spot. The current plan is to carpool to the valley. 

Part of the day-long trip will include a stop for lunch and visiting the Pioneers’ Museum in Imperial. Entrance fees to the museum range from $6 adults and $2 for children under 12.

Sunday, May 28 - BTSD Sunday Service. We will have a Dharma Service for young and old at the Temple at 10 a.m.; Rev. Smitty Smith will officiate. Note: There will be no Dharma School classes or Chanting Class. 

Sunday, May 28 - Point Loma. As of this writing, preliminary plans for a memorial service at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma are on hold.

Monday, May 29 - Mt. Hope Cemetery. The annual Community Interfaith Service will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Japanese-American Veterans Memorial and flagpole, which is located on Vista Lane on cemetery grounds The Pioneer Ocean View United Church of Christ will host this year’s remembrance. Hosting duties rotate among POVUCC, BTSD, and Japanese Christian Church.

Following the Mt. Hope ceremony, Rev. Laverne will officiate the temple’s service at Cypress View Mausoleum and Mortuary at 11:30 a.m.
