Local Notes for San Diego Sangha
San Diego’s Chanting Group will not be meeting on this date so we can attend this special event.
Texts. We will try to locate online options for this event. We have already posted the shortest of the three Pure Land Sutras here:
From the 1994 version of the BCA’s Shin Buddhist Service Book, Full Amida Kyo (Kanji, romaji, English translation, 35 pp.) (660 kb) [Tekmple Members can pick up free copy of this 1994 publication at the office. The BTSD Service Book does not contain the Amida Kyo.]
Stay Tuned. If we find online versions of the romaji (written in the western alphabet) we will post them here as soon as they are located.
Dharma Messages
It appears that the organizers have turned to newer faces to provide the messages, and you may be hearing their Dharma for the first time. A few notes about each may be in order.
Rev. Ko’e Umezu. Umezu Sensei is currently Assistant Minister at the West Los Angeles Buddhist Temple. She has published with the Young Buddhist Editorial group, which is focused on future generations of Buddhist leaders within our Jodo Shinshu tradition. As far as I know, she has not yet visited the Buddhist Temple of San Diego but perhaps we can have her as a speaker soon, whether by video or when we resume in-person worship.
Rev. Enrique Galvan-Alvarez. Galvan-Alvarez Sensei was a visiting scholar at the Jodo Shinshu Center in 2018 and visited our Temple during a Buddhism 1-2-3 the same year. We also host his video, “¿Qué es Jodo Shinshu?” (with English subtitles) on our Budhismo en Español Video page. He is a professor at the online-based Universidad Internacional de La Rioja-UNIR, based in Spain.
Rev. Isabelle Bernard. Bernard Sensei is associated with the New York Buddhist Church and has connections with San Diego, where her father lived when he passed away. Temple members Kaytee Sumida and Bill Teague attended training sessions at the Jodo Shinshu Center with her some years back. Bernard Sensei donated her father’s beautiful black upright piano which now graces the Geijin of the Hondo in the Buddhist Temple of San Diego. She has visited San Diego several times in recent years.
Event Link. Instead of a Zoom event, the sponsors are using a YouTube link for a live event. You do not have to register, just click by 12 noon to join. We expect that the remote attendees may not be able to interact or be seen onscreen. But the approach is useful because it involves only one step.
