Back on July 18, the San Diego ReAder, in a copyrighted article, explained how Hogetsu was about to close down for good when a South Bay foodies group decided to help keep them in business.

Read “How the Internet Saved Hogetsu,” by Ian Anderson, here.

The article credits a local Facebook group called Eating and Drinking with spreading the word to support this manju shop.

Maybe this is a good place to remind others that Hogetsu has received special recognition from the community in a special ceremony at the Japanese Friendship Garden. The manju and related pastries at Hogetsu are all hand-made with care. The Takedas (Masa and Haru) are known for the high quality of the confections. Mr. Takeda trained for years and was certified in Japan in his art, and it shoes in every piece.

While the article reported good news for the bakery, it’s likely that the unexpected wave of new business has since died down.

How about Us? Hogetsu has supported the Temple for decades by donating to its opportunity drawings each year. In these difficult times maybe we can return the favor. If you or a friend or family member can safely leave the house, observing masks and other safety measures, please consider calling Hogetsu to make an order for pickup. It will be a treat.

Note: Elsewhere we posted a listing of some of the vendors, like Hogetsu, which have supported the Temple at fundraisers over the years, and now it may be our turn to help them.
