The NEMBUTSU, the heart of the Jodo Shinshu tradition, is our topic for this special Members Seminar. All BTSD members in good standing are invited free of charge. Other Dharma Friends are welcome, with a $25 fee.

WHAT

The seminar will cover the history, theory, and practice of the Nembutsu.

  • History. Learn how and why reciting the Nembutsu is a practice deep in the history of Mahayana Buddhism.

  • Theory. Learn how reciting the Nembutsu can steady us in our lives and on our spiritual path.

  • Practice. Learn how to get more out of reciting the Nembutsu, at Temple, home, and beyond.

WHO

We are so grateful for our two presenters:

  • Our Supervising Minister, Rev. Gregory Gibbs, is able to travel down form Pasadena to share his career of wisdom and compassion. Thank you Gibbs Sensei!

  • Our own Rev. Laverne Imori, brings her years of insight and understanding. Thank you Laverne Sensei!

Bill Teague, Certified Minister’s Assistant, will serve as chair and host for the seminar.

WHO Needs a Ride? We don’t want anyone to miss this seminar. If you need a ride, just let us know. We’re likely to have another Temple member in your area who can oblige.

WHEN

Saturday, November 11, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. We scheduled this seminar during daylight hours to make it more accessible to all.

DEADLINE: Friday, November 10, to register by calling or emailing the Temple. There will also be a signup sheet in the office.

WHERE

  • At the Temple. We will meet in the Temple Hondo, the main hall on the top floor. The Hondo is elevator accessible,

  • Online. We are likely to livestream the seminar (we are also looking at a Zoom option), but the seminar will not be made available publicly. We will send you a private (or unlisted) link.

Note: We may post a video of the event one month later for the historical record.

WHY

Learning more about the history, theory, and practice of reciting the Nembutsu will make this ritual, sometimes performed as rote on unthinkingly, will help you in this world of Samsara and in the Pure Land of Amida Buddha.

  • Free to Members. This and other fee-based seminars, offered from time to time, will be provided free as a member benefit, and as our thank you for supporting our Temple.
