All the Details on Vista Buddhist Temple's Obon Festival (7/27-7/28)

Our friends at the Vista Buddhist Temple recently sent us all the details about the Obon Festival this weekend and we encourage all friends and members of BTSD to support them. Aothough many of us may be busy with BTSD on Sunday, July 28, we should all have time to join them on Saturday, July 27. Even our usual Saturday night lecture before the Obon Service has been rescheduled earlier in the day so we can hear the lexture and go to the Vista odori.

Dear Family & Friends of Vista Buddhist Temple,

It’s time for our summer Obon Festival the weekend of July 27-28, from 12:00-8:00 PM both days! Come enjoy the wonderful entertainment, delicious food, and the Bon Odori dancing! Attached is the festival flyer and below is the schedule of entertainment/presentations (subject to change).

Admission and parking are free. You can park 1) in the temple parking lot ; 2) on the street ; or 3) on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Scripps Medical Center Parking Structure next door (1st floor is for patient parking only).

SATURDAY, JULY 27
1:00—Introduction to Buddhism
(Sensei Judy Nakatomi) == Learn about Buddhism and bring your questions.
1:00— Sumi-e Demonstration
(Sumie Art Club) == Ink & wash painting where the emphasis is on brushwork and the perceived "spirit" or "essence" of a subject over direct imitation.
2:15—Judo Demonstration
(San Shi Judo) == Judo is a Japanese martial art that has been an Olympic sport since 1964. The goal is the harmonious development and eventual perfection of the human character.
3:00—Introduction to Bon Odori
(Elaine Marume) == Learn and practice some of the popular Bon Odori Japanese folk dances in preparation for tonight’s dancing.
3:30—Koto Musical Performance
(Yuki Easter & Southern California Koto Ensemble) == The koto, with its harplike sound, is considered the national instrument of Japan.

5:15—Taiko Drumming
(Junior Taiko Group & Shokenji Taiko of Vista Buddhist Temple) == Japanese-American Buddhist taiko drumming performed by the temple’s youth and adult groups.

6:30-7:45—Bon Odori Japanese Folk Dancing
== Everybody is invited to join in the dance circle! No special attire or experience is required.

SUNDAY, JULY 28:
1:00— Introduction to Buddhism
(Sensei Ros Dong) == Learn about Buddhism and bring your questions.
1:00— Sumi-e Demonstration
(Sumie Art Club) == Ink & wash painting where the emphasis is on brushwork and the perceived "spirit" or "essence" of a subject over direct imitation.
2:15— Okinawan Martial Arts Demonstration
(Yamashita Martial Arts) A unique blend of traditional Okinawan martial arts including karate, weapons, and the modern, very intense style known as “Suikendo”.
3:00—Introduction to Bon Odori
(Elaine Marume) == Learn and practice some of the popular Bon Odori Japanese folk dances in preparation for tonight’s dancing.
3:30—Okinawan Folk Songs
(Nishikawa Atsuko Minyo Kenkyusho) == Songs from the Okinawan islands of southwest Japan, accompanied by the sanshin, a three-string lute-like instrument whose body is covered in snake skin.
5:15—Taiko Drumming
