FUN MOVIE EVENT FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Fun Movie Event
This award-winning documentary shows the challenges and tradition of the living historical discipline of carving of wooden religious images in Japan. The director, Yujiro Seki, lived in San Diego for some months and have visited our Temple. During Covid, he interviewed our former Minister, Rev. Kenji Akahoshi, now retired.
A Good Cause
Funs raised at this event will be forwarded to the BCA=recommended charities for Maui Wildfire Relief. Additional donation opportunities by way of donation box will be available for this relief effort. A smiliar donation box will be present so if you enjoyed the film, you can help defray costs of production and distribution of the film.
RECOMMENDATIONS for CARVING THE DIVINE
Many Buddhist leaders have recommended the film, including our former minister and the Bishop of the BCA.
Rev. Kenji Akahoshi, Retired
Kenji Sensei has been an avid supporter of the film, inviting the Director, Yujiro Seki, to speak at the Temple.
Sensei also participated in interviews to help Mr. Seki promote the film.
(Stay tuned for more information about Kenji Sensei and Karen Akahoshi to visit us one weekend this Fall.)
Rev. Marvin Harada, Bishop of the BCA
"Carving the Divine is more than a movie about amazing wood sculptors of Japan. To me, the movie is about the Master-Apprentice, or the Master-Disciple relationship, and how this is still being transmitted in the traditional manner... stern, but yet ultimately kind, in training the apprentice to be a true artist in both skill and spirit."
Rev. Marvin Harada
Bishop, Buddhist Churches of America
Co-Director, BCA Center for Buddhist Education
Chicken Pot Pie as Fundraiser for Maui Wildfire Relief
The lunch served as part of the movie will be the Temple’s much loved home-style chicken pot pie. We will shortly confirm these prices, but we believe the fundraiser donation for each lunch will be $10. Take-home frozen pies, ready to be baked for an easy dinner, will be available via pre-order. Again, wait for the confirmation, but we believe the price for a full pie will be $20.
