Ho-Onko Opportunity 2: Buddhist Temple of San Diego, Saturday, Jan. 12, 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
"Practice of the Other Power," a special lecture by Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara, hosted by BTSD's Buddhist Education Committee. Kuwahara Sensei is also the guest speaker for Shinran's Memorial Service (Ho-Onko).
TOPIC: By opening ourselves up to the Nembutsu call of Amida Buddha, we are already softening the bonds of ego and selfishness. Some Buddhist traditions focus on the self-effort required to achieve enlightenment or at least greater awareness. In contrast, in the Jodo Shinshu tradition, the concept of Other Power is used to suggest how we can live our lives in a way that escapes the snares of the ego.
SPEAKER: Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara is currently resident minister at the Buddhist Berkeley Temple and co-director of the BCA Center for Buddhist Education at the Jodo Shinshu Center. Many of us know him as the driving force behing the BCA's wildly successful correspondence course on General and Shin Buddhism. (Kuwahara Sensei shared this photo with us because the spiky haircut he sported is a favorite of his three young sons.)
Free and open to the public (donations always gratefully received). Light refreshments will be served.
To be held in the Sangha Hall on Temple grounds.
