Feeding America: Taking Dana To The National Level
Here we are. More than a year since pandemic restrictions were put into place, and even though vaccines are gradually being distributed, the future is still very unclear. We all hope for better times, but we can be sure of one thing. Hunger doesn’t wait for a rosy future. It doesn’t care about pandemic restrictions, lost jobs, or closed schools. Right now 1 in 8 people face hunger in San Diego County, including 1 in 6 children.
In this adverse environment Feeding San Diego continues to serve the community in its mission to fight hunger. And through the Feeding America nationwide network this organization takes the fight to the national level.
Feeding Texas, another Feeding America member, scrambled to support that state following February's deadly blackouts that left millions of people without electricity and heat for days in subfreezing temperatures. When Texans found empty grocery shelves Feeding Texas leveraged its network of food banks to deliver meals to those most in need.
Feeding America works with 200 food banks and 60,000 food partners across the nation. Since the start of the pandemic, their network has distributed an estimated 5.3 billion meals. Still, according to their estimate, 50 million people may experience hunger because of the current pandemic.
Due to current health directives we are still not able to gather at our temple, or run some of our yearly donation drives, but we can still help.
