Temple to Host Flag-Signing for Internees Sept. 19
Although the Temple will not be open for a service on September 19, it will host a parking lot event with social distancing as part of a statewide flag-signing drive to celebrate surviving internees of World War II relocation camps.
Open Air Event Hosted by Temple
Sunday, September 19, 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
All living former internees are invited to add their signatures to a vintage 48-star flag. This will be the only event for the project in San Diego County as far as we know.
The Project
Wanting to honor surviving Japanese Americans of the WWII incarceration camps for their sacrifice and to honor their legacy and memory, Judge Johnny Gogo a California Superior Court Judge in Santa Clara County (San Jose) obtained a WWI era, 48 star, American flag with the intent of having survivors sign the flag. He has travelled up and down the west coast (and Washington DC) at his own expense, obtaining signatures of former internees.
The flag will be donated to the Japanese American Museum in San Jose on Fred Korematsu Day on January 30, 2022.
About Judge Gogo
Judge Gogo has ties to San Diego as he did most of his advanced schooling here. He attended Sacramento City College, Riverside City College, graduated from U.C. San Diego with a BA in Political Science and then obtained his JD from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego.
He is part of the Court’s Community Outreach Program. His father was in the military and so the family has lived in Germany, Japan, Guam, California, Alaska and Kentucky.
