Volunteer to Help Prep Our Last Rummage Sale

What is currently planned as our last rummage sale will take place Saturday, August 20, and Sunday, August 21, 2022. We want to do a good job if this is our last effort.

We need your help at what may be the close of an era.

Please Volunteer for Our Last Rummage Sale: CHOOSE YOUR TIME

See our online Google document for signing up at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pfCaqBbq_xnOiZcDHNdvpjRAodH9Axx_kGK3HKjaTwI/edit?usp=sharing. Let’s end our tradition by doing it well. For a successful last sale, we need your help in sorting and other chores. Official work days start Saturday, August 6, and increase in frequency leading up to the sale itself starting Saturday, August 20. Work shifts are typically 3 hours and you will have friendly helpers alongside you, along with tasty snacks and sometimes meals!

Reminder: Donations Closed. The deadline was July 29 and we are filled to capacity. If you have items to donate still, please turn to the many fine charities accepting donations.

End of an Era: The History of the Temple Rummage Sale

Especially as this is planned to be our last rummage sale, we want to take this time to look back. We can start by thanking all the members of the Adult Buddhist Association, which rallied young adults after World War II to help the Temple grow and thrive. It was the ABA members who started our Rummage Sale Tradition. This writer does not recall wen the Rummage Sale started, but it may have been as early as the 1970s

As ABA members grew older and slowed down to enjoy their retirement, they passed the baton to the Temple Board. Holly Hidinger and Nancy Martinez chaired for a number of years.

In recent decades, while many people helped out with Rummage Sale, we want to thank frequent Rummage Sale Chairs Holly Hidinger and Nancy Martinez, as representatives of all of the Temple members who donated goods and their time for the annual sale. In recent years Glenn Torio and Nancy Martinez have chaired.

Through the Rummage Sale we got to meet our neighbors and made many friends of repeat customers who looked forward to the sale every year. Unsold donations benefitted an outreach program in the Philippines, an orphanage in Tijuana, Rachels Women’s Shelter, the San Diego Humane Society and other worthwhile organizations.

What Does the Future Hold?

We know and appreciate that Temple families have routinely saved items to donate to the Temple Rummage Sale, and that many of you will miss this opportunity to help the Temple with their items.

In future it is likely that you’ll see Temple groups publicize specific requests for donations. For example,

  • Obon Again Resale Shop. We will continue to accept appropriate donation items for the Obon Again Shop (supporting the Scholarship fund).

  • Silent Auction at Bazaar. We will continue to accept appropriate donation items for the Silent Auction held during our annual Bazaar (supporting general improvements).

  • White Elephant Sales. White Elephant will accept handcrafted items (new), "collectables", and crafting supplies. If questions-- contact Kaytee Sumida (bodhikt@aol.com).

  • Dana Group. From time to time the Dana Group may sponsor special clothing drives on behalf of a community need.

  • EcoSangha. Our EcoSangha may host special recycling events (such as electronics recycling).

If you have questions, please contact the Temple, unless otherwise indicated.

For other items we encourage you to turn to other charities accepting donations or hosting recycling events.
