95th Anniversary Drive-Thru Event 12 Noon to 2 pm at Temple by Alphabetical Order?

Our Activities Committee Shares Details

In place of the in-person event, we will have a pre-ordered Bento pick-up and Akahoshi Farewell Drive-Thru event on October 10, between 12 noon and 2:00 p.m. The Bento will be the same as we had planned to have at the original event and orders were placed in September. We will not have additional Bentos for sale on the day of the event; preorders only.

Alphabetical Order?

Only to avoid traffic jams, we will follow the same system we have used for Yasukochi Farms pickups. For families with last names in the alphabet, if possible please attend as follows:

A-M 12 Noon to 1 p.m.
N-Z 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Personal Greeting

Our retiring Reverend Kenji and Mrs. Karen Akahoshi will be seated along the drive-thru lane to give you a brief chance to say “so long” and wish them the best. However, you will need to remain in your car, and make your stop short. So that the traffic will continue to flow, you will not be able to park or leave your vehicle to visit with the Akahoshis. They will do their best to greet everyone during the drive-thru. We appreciate your cooperation.

Hondo Repainted

The drive-thru will also let you see our fresh new coat of paint on the Hondo exterior.

Pick-ups and Drop-offs

Picking Up

At the drive-thru, there will be some things to pick up:

  • Small memento or souvenir of our 95th Anniversary.

  • Pre-ordered Temple T-shirts previously ordered by the September deadline. Don’t worry; we have more but this new batch is now available to order (with a mid-November deadline) for later pick up.

  • Pre-ordered bentos. (With apologies, all bentos are now sold. There will be no bentos available for sale at the event, as far as we know.)

Dropping Off

  • Small new stuffed animals for the Scouts' Stuffed Animal Collection, an interfaith and community effort, with the collection of new 8”-10" stuffed animals for Rady Children's Hospital. While the Temple does not have its own Scout troop, with this drive we are supporting the efforts of our youth who are in scouting programs. See full article here.

  • Spontaneous donations to the 95th Anniversary Capital Improvements (not just the painting but the more secure metal replacement to the currently aging and wooden Dodsen Street staircase).

NOTE: A true Farewell party has been postponed until 2022 when we will be able to gather and celebrate!

Thanks to Glenn Torio and Ann Ong of our Activities Committee for this update; see also their report on page 2 of the October issue of the Bussei Script (Kaiho).
